Care, drying, meaning & decorating ideas
The protea looks like it comes from another planet. In fact, it comes from South Africa — and it is one of the oldest flowering plants on Earth.
The protea is not a flower for the mainstream. It is large, sculptural, almost a bit otherworldly—and that's precisely why designers, architects, and anyone who wants something special love it. A single protea in a simple vase makes a statement that no bouquet of roses could ever make.
Named after the Greek god Proteus, who could change his shape, the Protea family is indeed incredibly diverse. From the giant King Protea to the delicate Pincushion Protea — the family comprises over 1,600 species.

Protea species for floristry
King Protea (Protea cynaroides) is the national flower of South Africa and the best-known species. Its flower heads can reach up to 30 cm in diameter—a single bloom can fill an entire vase. Colors range from creamy white to pink to dark red.
Pincushion protea (Leucospermum) has round flower heads with needle-like stamens that resemble a pincushion. Bright orange or yellow, very long-lasting and perfect as an accent in modern bouquets.
Banksia — strictly speaking a relative, not directly a Protea, but from the same family. Cylindrical flower spikes in yellow, orange, or red. Dries excellently.
Protea in a vase
Caring for proteas in a vase is incredibly easy—easier than for almost any other flower. Cut the stem at an angle, use clean water, no flower food is needed (proteas actually don't tolerate it well). Change the water every few days. That's it.
Protea lasts two to three weeks in a vase. After that, it slowly dries out—and even dried, it still looks fantastic. You can simply leave it in the vase and remove the water.
Tip: Do not add flower food to the water for proteas — the plant originates from nutrient-poor soils and is sensitive to too many nutrients in the water. Clean tap water is sufficient.
Drying protea
Drying proteas is almost easier than keeping them fresh. Simply hang them upside down or place them upright in a vase without water. The bloom will retain its shape and color for months, sometimes years. No silica gel or special treatment is needed.
Dried protea is one of the cornerstones of the dried flower movement. Combined with dried eucalyptus, pampas grass, and thistle, it creates a modern arrangement that requires absolutely no maintenance.
Protea meaning
The protea symbolizes courage, change, and uniqueness. In South Africa, it represents diversity and the beauty of being different. A protea as a gift conveys the message: "You are unique" or "I admire your courage."
In wedding floristry, the protea is increasingly used as an alternative to the classic rose — for couples who want something unconventional.

Frequently asked questions about Protea
It stays fresh for two to three weeks, then dries out and can be kept as a dried flower for months or even years. Simply remove the water and let it stand.
Unfortunately not. Protea needs a Mediterranean to subtropical climate and cannot tolerate frost. In Austria, it is only available as a cut flower (imported from South Africa or Portugal).
