Welche Blumen bluehen, was man beachten muss und wie Pflanzen den Winter ueberstehen
Winter in Vienna is gray and cold. But there are flowers that bloom דווקא now - and a few rules to help houseplants make it through the winter safely.
When everything outside is bare, winter flowers become all the more important. The selection in flower shops changes: amaryllis, poinsettias, and Christmas roses replace sunflowers and dahlias. And houseplants need special attention now.
In Austria, the floristically relevant winter lasts from November to February. During this time, cut flowers come almost exclusively from the Netherlands, Colombia, Kenya, and Ethiopia - directly from the flower auction in Aalsmeer.
Winter flowers for the vase
- Amaryllis (Hippeastrum) - The star of winter. Huge blooms in red, white, pink, or striped. Lasts up to two weeks in a vase as a cut flower.
- Roses - Available year-round, and in winter they come from South America or Africa. Red roses at Christmas and Valentine's Day are timeless favorites.
- Holly (Ilex) - Red berries and dark green leaves - the classic choice for festive arrangements.
- Eucalyptus - Silvery green, wonderfully fragrant, and lasts for ages. Perfect as a companion in winter bouquets.
- Carnations - Often underrated, but incredibly long-lasting. Especially beautiful in winter in warm tones.
Winter-blooming plants
Poinsettia - Its red bracts are the symbol of the Christmas season. No frost, no drafts, and never below 15 degrees.
Christmas rose (Helleborus) - Blooms right in the snow. Native to Austria and hardy down to minus 20 degrees.
Amaryllis (potted) - From bulb to bloom in six to eight weeks. A truly impressive display.
Orchids - Often bloom best in winter because they need cool nighttime temperatures as a signal to form flowers.
How to help houseplants get through the winter
Winter is the most challenging time for indoor plants. Less light, dry heated air, and cold windowsills put most plants under stress. The most important rules:
- Water less - Most plants barely grow in winter and therefore need significantly less water. Overwatering is the most common mistake in winter.
- Do not fertilize - Do not fertilize from November to February. The plants are resting and cannot process the nutrients.
- Increase humidity - Indoor heating air is extremely dry. Mist plants regularly or place bowls of water on the radiator.
- Keep away from cold window panes - Leaves that touch the cold glass can suffer cold damage. Leave a little space.
Tip: Do not place plants directly above the radiator. The rising warm air dries out the leaves. It is better to position them slightly to the side or use a windowsill with a water channel.

Frequently asked questions about flowers in winter
Amaryllis, red roses, potted orchids, poinsettias, or a winter bouquet with holly, fir branches, and carnations. All of these options are available from your florist throughout the winter.
Usually drafts, cold, or waterlogging. The poinsettia is a tropical plant and cannot tolerate temperatures below 15 degrees. Always wrap it up when transporting it in winter. Water evenly, but never let it stand in water.
Only hardy plants: Christmas rose, winter heath, ivy, boxwood. But potted plants still need frost protection for their roots - wrap the pot with jute, fleece, or bubble wrap. Roots freeze faster in pots than they do in the ground.
