Flower Care from A to Z
Flower Care Guide: How to Keep Your Cut Flowers Fresh for Longer
Cut flowers are a wonderful way to brighten your home and create a festive atmosphere. With the right care, your flowers can stay beautiful for much longer. Here are the most important flower care tips.

Right After Purchase
Clean vase: Use a thoroughly clean vase or flower vase. Residue from old flowers can contain bacteria that speed up the wilting of fresh flowers.
Fresh water: Fill the vase with clean, lukewarm water. Room temperature is ideal, as it travels through the stems more easily.
Trim the stems: Cut the bottom 2–3 cm of the stems at an angle. This increases the surface area for absorbing water and nutrients.
Remove Foliage
Remove any leaves that would sit below the waterline. Otherwise, they can rot in the water and encourage bacterial growth.
Use Flower Food
Most flower shops provide flower food free of charge. This mix contains sugar, disinfectant, and fertiliser. Follow the instructions on the packaging, as the correct dosage is important.
Optimal Placement
Where you place your flowers has a big effect on how long they last:
- Keep them away from fruit: Fruit releases ethylene gas, which makes flowers wilt quickly
- Avoid direct sunlight: Although flowers need light, intense heat can speed up wilting
- Do not place them near radiators: Heat reduces their lifespan
- Cool spots are best: A cooler place helps preserve their beauty for longer
Daily Care
Change the water: Change the water every 2–3 days. If it turns cloudy, replace it immediately.
Check the stem ends: Trim about 1 cm off the base of the stems and remove any rotten parts.
Check surrounding leaves: Remove any dripping or decaying leaves to prevent rot.
Different Flower Varieties and Their Care
Roses: Need deeper water and more frequent water changes. Remove any thorns below the waterline.
Tulips: Prefer cool places and need less water than other cut flowers.
Carnations: Are hardy and long-lasting. They can keep longer in less fresh water than other flowers.
Lilies: Remove the stamens (pollen sacs) as soon as the blooms open to avoid stains.
How to Revive Wilting Flowers
If your flowers start to wilt, there is still hope:
- Trim 2–3 cm off the base of the stems
- Fill the vase with fresh, cool water
- Place the vase in a cool spot for a few hours
- Remove any rotten or wilted leaves
Often, the flowers will perk up again afterwards!
Tips for a Longer Vase Life
- Use distilled water instead of tap water for delicate varieties
- Add a drop of bleach to help fight bacteria (not too much!)
- Mist the flowers daily to remove dust
- Keep flowers away from steam and cold drafts
With these simple tips, you can enjoy your cut flowers for up to 2 weeks longer. The right care is the key to long-lasting flower beauty!
