Aphids, spider mites, fungus gnats, and what really works
Sooner or later, every houseplant gets affected. Tiny flies in the soil, sticky leaves, fine webs – pests are simply part of plant life. But you can get rid of them.
Plant pests are annoying, but no reason to panic. Most can be controlled with simple remedies if you catch them early enough. The key is to check your plants regularly – the tops of the leaves, the undersides, and the soil.
Fungus Gnats – The Tiny Black Flies
The most common pest affecting houseplants. Tiny black flies rise up from the soil. The flies themselves are harmless, but their larvae feed on delicate roots.
How to spot them: Small black flies that rise up from the soil when you water.
Cause: Soil that is too wet. The larvae need moisture.
Treatment: Water less and let the soil dry out between waterings. Yellow sticky traps catch the adult flies. Nematodes (from the garden center) target the larvae in the soil. A layer of sand or quartz gravel on top of the soil prevents egg-laying.
Spider Mites – The Invisible Threat
Tiny spider-like pests that feed on the undersides of leaves. They love dry, warm air, which is why they appear most often in winter when the heating is on.
How to spot them: Fine webs on leaf stems and in leaf axils. Tiny pale spots on the leaves (feeding marks). Leaves turn yellow and fall off.
Treatment: Increase humidity (mist plants regularly). Rinse affected leaves off in the shower. For severe infestations: spray neem oil or rapeseed oil treatments onto the undersides of the leaves.
Aphids
Small green, black, or white insects that gather in colonies on young shoots and buds. They suck plant sap and excrete sticky honeydew.
How to identify it: Sticky leaves, deformed shoot tips, visible aphid colonies.
Treatment: Rinse the plant thoroughly in the shower (most aphids will wash off). Spray the leaves with a mild dish soap solution (a small dash of dish soap in water). For severe infestations: neem oil spray.
Scale insects and mealybugs
Scale insects look like small brown shells on stems and leaves. Mealybugs are recognized by white, cotton-like nests in the leaf axils.
How to identify it: Brown shells (scale insects) or white cottony tufts (mealybugs). Sticky residue.
Treatment: Dab individual insects with a cotton swab soaked in alcohol. Spray with neem oil. For severe infestations: systemic insecticides (insert sticks into the soil). Scale insects are stubborn — patience and repeated treatment are needed.
Thrips
Tiny, elongated insects that move quickly. They leave silvery streaks on the leaves and black droppings.
How to identify it: Silvery streaks and spots on leaves, black dots (droppings).
Treatment: Blue sticky traps (thrips are attracted to blue). Rinse off the plant in the shower. Use neem oil or predatory mites (biological control).
Prevention:
Always keep new plants in quarantine for two weeks before placing them with the others.
Check the undersides of the leaves regularly — that’s where most pests like to hide.
Healthy, vigorous plants are less likely to be infested. Good care is the best protection against pests.
Black spots on a plant can indicate various pests or a fungal infection — an accurate diagnosis is the first step toward the right treatment.
If your plant has black spots, pests or a fungal infection may be the cause.

Frequently asked questions about plant pests
Yes, neem oil is one of the most effective natural remedies. It works against aphids, spider mites, thrips, and mealybugs. Important: Spray evenly on both the top and underside of the leaves. Repeat several times at weekly intervals, because it does not kill the eggs.
Yes, most pests spread quickly to nearby plants. That is why infested plants should be isolated and treated immediately. This is the most important first step.
If the infestation does not improve despite several weeks of treatment and the plant is severely weakened, it is sometimes better to dispose of it - before the pests spread to healthy plants. That is not a defeat, but plant protection for the rest of your collection.
