Which flowers last longest at a grave in Vienna?
Vienna is in hardiness zone 7b (average minimum approx. –12 °C to –15 °C). Frost-tolerant, low-maintenance plants are therefore particularly well suited for grave planting.
| Plant | Bloom season (Vienna) | Position | Frost tolerance | Care & use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chrysanthemums | Sep–Nov | Sun to partial shade | down to –10 °C | Water moderately; classic for All Saints’ Day; grave planting & vase cutting |
| Heather (Erica) | Oct–Apr | Sun to partial shade | down to –20 °C | Use lime-free water; evergreen; ideal for ground cover |
| Pansies | Mar–Jun | Sun to partial shade | down to –15 °C | Water regularly; remove spent blooms; grave soil or container |
| Primroses | Feb–May | Partial shade | down to –10 °C | Avoid waterlogging; good for containers and spring planting |
| Ivy | Evergreen | Shade to partial shade | down to –25 °C | Minimal care; year-round ground cover; suppresses weeds |
Tip for All Saints’ Day (1 November): Chrysanthemums are the traditional choice in Austria. Order your All Saints’ Day grave decoration at least one week in advance – demand is especially high during this period and certain varieties sell out quickly.
Practical tip for the Central Cemetery: Graves on the fully sun-exposed south side heat up extremely in summer and require more frequent watering. Choose heat-resistant plants such as upright geraniums or wax begonias for unprotected locations. Shaded spots under old tree canopies are excellent for ivy and pansies.

Our delivery driver cross-checks the cemetery map, grave number and name on the headstone on site to ensure the decoration is placed at the correct grave.
- Wreaths: Laid flat on the grave slab or leaned against the grave cross – depending on the situation on site.
- Arrangements: Positioned securely; a weighing stone is placed underneath in windy conditions.
- Bouquets: Placed in the grave vase if one is available and supplied with fresh water.
- Ribbons: Secured to the wreath with wire to withstand weather.
- Photo confirmation: On request, you receive a photo of the placed grave decoration directly via WhatsApp at +43 660 221 4777.
