Where does Father’s Day come from? — The surprising story

Germany: From beer festival to day of appreciation

The roots of Father’s Day lie in Germany — though not quite in the way you might expect. In the Middle Ages, Ascension Day was commonly referred to as “Father’s Day,” with “Father” meaning the Heavenly Father. Back then, men would walk through the fields in rogation processions, praying for a good harvest.

Over time, it evolved into a cheerful men’s outing — with beer, handcarts, and plenty of good spirits. It wasn’t until 1936 that Germany officially declared Ascension Day as Father’s Day. The boozy men’s excursions remained popular for a while, but today Father’s Day there is very much a true family celebration.

USA: Sonora Smart Dodd and the recognition of fathers

Father’s Day owes its worldwide popularity to the United States. From 1909 onward, Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, campaigned for a special day dedicated to fathers — inspired by Mother’s Day, which had only just been introduced. Her own father had raised six children on his own after being widowed.

Father’s Day was first celebrated in Spokane on June 19, 1910. But it wasn’t until 1972 that President Richard Nixon officially declared the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day.

Father’s Day in Austria — how we celebrate it

In Austria, Father’s Day falls on the second Sunday in June. That sets us apart from Germany (Ascension Day in May) and the USA (third Sunday in June). It is not a public holiday, but it is being celebrated more and more.

Typically Austrian: a shared breakfast or lunch with the whole family. Many families go on an outing — to a wine tavern, to the lake, or into the mountains. And of course there are gifts: from handmade cards by the children to thoughtful surprises.

Floristry tip: Father’s Day flowers are still unusual in Austria — and that’s exactly what makes them such a lovely surprise. A bouquet in warm tones (orange, yellow, green) or a bold rose color is usually very well received by most fathers.
