Sunflowers – pure summer

No flower captures summer quite like the sunflower. Large, bright yellow flower heads that turn toward the sun (heliotropism). They radiate optimism, warmth, and joy for life.

  • Varieties: From small mini sunflowers (40 cm) to giants (3 m+). For bouquets: branching varieties with multiple blooms per stem.
  • Colors: Classic yellow, but also red, orange, bronze, and bicolor.
  • Vase: 7–12 days. Cut the stems at an angle and give them plenty of water. More care tips.
  • Meaning: Admiration, loyalty, "You are my sunshine."

Dahlias – the late-summer star

Dahlias start in July and bloom until the first frost. With over 20,000 varieties, they come in every imaginable shape and color – from the small pompon dahlia to the giant "Dinner Plate" with a diameter of 35 cm.

  • Standout varieties: "Café au Lait" (creamy pink), "Bishop of Llandaff" (red with dark foliage).
  • Meaning: Elegance, inner strength, gratitude.
  • Vase: 5–8 days. Briefly dip the stem ends in hot water.

Lavender – the scent of Provence

Lavender is more than a plant – it’s a way of life. Its unmistakable fragrance calms the senses, keeps moths away, and attracts bees.

  • Blooming season: June to July (in the garden). As a dried flower, it can be enjoyed all year round.
  • Colors: Classic lilac-violet, but also white and pink.
  • Meaning: Purity, stillness, devotion. In Provence, it is a symbol of romance.
  • In a bouquet: Perfect as a fragrant companion to roses, hydrangeas, or meadow flowers.
  • Drying: Lavender dries beautifully – simply hang it upside down. It keeps its fragrance and color for months.

Lilies – elegant and fragrant

Lilies are among the most elegant cut flowers. Their large, trumpet-shaped blooms and intense fragrance make them a standout in any bouquet.

  • Varieties: Oriental lilies (strongly scented, large blooms), Asiatic lilies (fragrance-free, vivid colors), LA hybrids (a mix of both).
  • Colors: White, pink, red, yellow, orange, and speckled varieties.
  • Vase life: 10–14 days. Remove the stamens (they shed pollen and shorten the flower’s vase life).
  • Meaning: Purity (white), passion (red), prosperity (yellow).

Allergy tip: If you find the scent of lilies too intense or have an allergic reaction, Asiatic lilies are fragrance-free and just as beautiful. Simply mention it when ordering.

More summer flowers

  • Delphinium: Tall flower spikes in the rarest true blue. Dramatic and elegant in a bouquet.
  • Gladioli: Sword-shaped flower spikes in every color. A true comeback star in modern floristry.

  • Cosmos: Delicate, airy blooms in pink and white. Easy-going and bee-friendly.

  • Protea: Exotic, sculptural, and exceptionally long-lasting. The "King Protea" is South Africa’s national flower.
  • Echinacea (coneflower): Natural, resilient, and loved by insects. Beautiful autumn shades.

Keeping flowers fresh in hot weather – summer tips

In summer, flowers wilt more quickly. Here is how bouquets stay fresh even at 30°C:

  • Cool location: In the evening, place the vase on the balcony or in the coolest room.
  • Change the water daily – bacteria multiply rapidly in hot weather.
  • Add ice cubes to the water – this keeps the temperature low.
  • Re-cut the stems every 2 days – in hot weather, the water-conducting vessels clog more quickly.
  • No direct sunlight on the vase – not even on a windowsill.
  • Use flower food – it contains bacteria inhibitors that are especially important in warm weather.

Frequently asked questions about summer flowers

Lilies (10–14 days), sunflowers (7–12 days), and gladioli (7–10 days) last the longest. Dahlias last a bit less, around 5–8 days, but make up for it with their spectacular look. Protea can even last up to 3 weeks.

Keep them in a cool spot (no direct sunlight), change the water daily, add ice cubes to the water, trim the stems every 2 days, and use flower food. In the evening, place the vase in the coolest room.

Dahlias bloom from July until the first frost. At the florist, they are available as cut flowers from July/August onward. Peak season is August/September, when the widest variety is available.

Recommended: The orange stamens leave stubborn pollen stains on clothing and furniture. Removing them also helps the blooms last longer, because the flower does not use energy for pollination. Carefully pinch them off with tweezers or your fingers.
