Not every flower is always in season — but some cut flowers are available from florists all year round. And houseplants bloom whenever they please anyway.
Cut flowers — available all year round
Roses
The best-selling cut flower in the world — and available all year round. Main growing regions: Ecuador, Kenya and Colombia supply them 365 days a year. In Austria, the garden rose season is June/July, but imported roses are always available.
Gerberas
Cheerful, round blooms in every colour. Greenhouse growing has made gerberas a year-round flower classic. Long-lasting and affordable — perfect for colourful bouquets.
Chrysanthemums
Available all year round in hundreds of varieties and colours from Dutch greenhouses. Exceptionally long-lasting in a vase (2–3 weeks). Peak season: autumn (All Saints’ Day).
Carnations
Underrated, but fantastic: modern carnation varieties in pastel, burgundy or two-tone. They last up to 3 weeks in a vase — record-holders among cut flowers. Available all year round from Colombia and Kenya.
Lisianthus (Eustoma)
Looks like a rose, but it’s a different plant — and lasts longer. Available in white, pink, purple and two-tone varieties. Available all year round, with peak season in summer.

Frequently Asked Questions
Carnations last the longest — up to 3 weeks in a vase. Next come chrysanthemums (2–3 weeks), alstroemeria (2 weeks), and lisianthus (10–14 days). Tips for keeping flowers fresh can help extend the vase life of all flowers.
Flowers that are out of season have to be imported — often by plane from South America or East Africa. That makes them more expensive. Tulips in March are affordable (peak season), while tulips in August are hardly available. The Seasonal Calendar helps you find the best prices.
African violets bloom almost continuously with good care — all year round. Orchids (Phalaenopsis) bloom for 2–4 months at a time, with breaks in between. Anthuriums and peace lilies also flower for many months. More care tips.
