Care, Drying, Meaning & Decorating Ideas
Protea looks as if it came from another planet. In fact, it comes from South Africa — and it is one of the oldest flowering plants on Earth.
The Protea is not a flower for the mainstream. It’s bold, sculptural, almost a little otherworldly — and that is exactly why designers, architects, and anyone looking for something exceptional love it. A single Protea in a simple vase makes a statement no bouquet of roses ever could.
Named after the Greek god Proteus, who could change his shape, Protea is truly incredibly diverse. From the majestic King Protea to the delicate Pincushion Protea — the family includes more than 1,600 species.

Protea Varieties for Floristry
King Protea (Protea cynaroides) is South Africa’s national flower and the best-known variety. Its flower heads can reach up to 30 cm in diameter — a single bloom can fill an entire vase. Colors range from creamy white to pink to deep red.
Pincushion Protea (Leucospermum) has round flower heads with needle-like stamens that look like a pincushion. Bright orange or yellow, extremely long-lasting, and perfect as an accent in modern bouquets.
Banksia — strictly speaking a relative, not a true Protea, but from the same family. Cylindrical flower heads in yellow, orange, or red. Dries beautifully. Also recommended in this context: Ilex Red Berries. Also recommended in this context: Red Passion.
Protea in a Vase
Protea care in a vase is wonderfully simple — easier than with almost any other flower. Trim the stem at an angle, use clean water, and skip the flower food (Protea actually doesn’t tolerate it well). Change the water every few days. That’s it.
Protea lasts two to three weeks in a vase. After that, it slowly dries — and still looks fantastic as a dried flower. You can simply leave it in the vase and stop adding water.
Tip: Do not add flower food to the water for Protea — the plant comes from nutrient-poor soils and reacts sensitively to too many nutrients in the water. Clean tap water is all it needs.
Drying Protea
Drying Protea is almost even easier than keeping it fresh. Simply hang it upside down or place it upright in a vase without water. The bloom keeps its shape and color for months, sometimes even years. No silica gel or special treatment needed.
Dried Protea is one of the cornerstones of the dried flower movement. Combined with dried eucalyptus, pampas grass, and thistle, it creates a modern arrangement that needs no care at all.
Meaning of Protea
The meaning of Protea is courage, transformation, and individuality. In South Africa, it stands for diversity and the beauty of being different. As a gift, a Protea says: “You are unique” or “I admire your courage.”
In wedding floristry, Protea is increasingly being used as an alternative to the classic rose — for couples looking for something unconventional.

Frequently Asked Questions About Protea
It stays fresh for two to three weeks, then it dries naturally and lasts for months or even years as a dried flower. Simply leave out the water and let it stand.
Unfortunately not. Protea needs a Mediterranean to subtropical climate and cannot tolerate frost. In Austria, it is only available as a cut flower imported from South Africa or Portugal.
