Flowers for an urn burial
Subtle urn wreaths and dignified arrangements for the final farewell
Flowers for an urn burial
The way we say goodbye is changing: in Austria, urn burial has now become a very common form of burial. As the setting is often more intimate than with a traditional burial, the question often arises as to the right flower arrangements for the urn.
Two stages of farewell: how it unfolds
A cremation is usually divided into two separate ceremonies, which is also crucial when choosing the right funeral flowers:
- The farewell ceremony (memorial service): This usually takes place with the coffin before the actual cremation. Here, the rules of classic funeral floristry apply: large funeral wreaths, lavish coffin bouquets, and representative arrangements are entirely customary. (Please note: the coffin flowers are usually cremated with it).
- The urn burial: Often held days or weeks later in a small, intimate circle at the cemetery, in a columbarium (urn niche), or as part of a natural burial. For this moment, compact, understated flower arrangements are needed so the small urn is not overwhelmed.
Floral designs for urn graves
Getting the proportions right is essential here. A wreath that is too large can quickly look out of place next to the urn. A professional flower shop pays close attention to perfect proportions when creating urn arrangements:
Urn wreath
A delicate wreath (often 30 to 50 cm in diameter), arranged so that the urn can be placed in the center during the ceremony. It creates a protective floral frame.
Urn arrangement
A low, compact arrangement that is gently draped against or around the vessel. It feels soft, flowing, and deeply personal.
The condolence bouquet
A hand-tied sympathy bouquet designed to be laid flat, in soft, comforting colors. An excellent choice for guests who would like to express their condolences to the family, as the bouquet can simply be placed on the grave slab after the ceremony.
Natural burials (tree burial)
More and more people are choosing woodland burials. Important to know: Wire, plastic, and floral foam are strictly prohibited in many natural burial grounds. If you would like to lay flowers here, choose loose blooms or 100% biodegradable arrangements without any binding materials. It’s best to check with the administration in advance.
As a final farewell, mourners often place a single flower into the grave as the urn is lowered. White roses, delicate carnations, or small green sprigs are especially suitable for this.
Which flowers radiate peace?
The shape of an urn is simple and understated. The flowers should reflect that. Instead of heavy, dark blooms, people usually choose more delicate, lighter flowers for an urn burial:
- Delicate freesias: They have a light fragrance and radiate incredible gentleness.
- White baby's breath: It feels feather-light and embraces the urn like a soft cushion.
- Ranunculus & roses: White or soft pink blooms that, when tied closely together, express comfort and eternal love. You can also find suitable stems in our Single Flowers.
- Lavender & rosemary: Their natural fragrance symbolizes peace and remembrance, making them especially suitable for natural burials.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
It is advisable to keep things understated here, as space at an urn grave (or in a columbarium) is usually very limited. For guests, a single white rose or a small hand-tied bouquet laid flat is by far the better choice.
While classic coffin wreaths are often 80 to 100 cm in size, delicate rings of around 30 to a maximum of 50 cm in diameter are usually chosen for an urn. The inner space must be designed so that the vessel can be placed securely and beautifully inside it.
To ease the burden on the family during this difficult time, we can deliver arrangements and condolence bouquets directly to the relevant viewing chapel or funeral home on request. Simply provide us with the exact details during checkout.
At an urn burial, the flower arrangement is placed directly on the urn or at the grave. The choice of flowers should be subtle and dignified – white roses, lilies, or chrysanthemums are especially suitable.
