Sunflowers in Pots - Planting and Care

The best varieties for balconies and terraces, plus sowing, location, and care tips

Sunflowers don’t need a garden - they also bring sunny yellow to summer on balconies and terraces. With the right varieties and a little care, they thrive beautifully.

The Best Varieties for Pots

Not every sunflower is suitable for growing in pots. Classic garden varieties grow too tall (up to 3 meters!). For balconies and terraces, there are compact dwarf varieties:

  • "Teddy Bear" / "Teddy bar": 40-60 cm tall, double, fluffy blooms. A favorite for pots.
  • "Sunspot": 50-60 cm, large blooms on a compact plant.
  • "Big Smile": 30-40 cm, very compact with a classic sunflower look.
  • "Pacino": 30-40 cm, several blooms per plant. Ideal for balcony flower boxes.
  • "Little Becka": 30-40 cm, bi-colored red and yellow. Unusual and lovely.
  • "Musicbox": 50-70 cm, various colors (yellow, red, bi-colored). A colorful mix.

Sowing & Planting

  • Timing: Start them indoors from mid-April, then move them outside from mid-May (after the last frost).
  • Sowing depth: Press the seeds 2-3 cm deep into the soil and water well.
  • Germination: At 18-25°C, the seeds germinate in 7-14 days.
  • Pot size: At least 20 cm in diameter per plant, ideally 30 cm. For tall varieties: 40+ cm.
  • Soil: Nutrient-rich flower potting soil. Sunflowers are heavy feeders - they need plenty of nutrients.
  • Drainage: A drainage hole in the pot is essential. Clay pebbles at the bottom help prevent waterlogging.

A project for children: Sunflowers are perfect for kids - the large seeds are easy to handle, germination appears quickly, and the result is impressive. A sunflower competition ("Whose sunflower will grow the tallest?") is fun all summer long.

Care in Pots

Location

  • Full sun: Sunflowers need at least 6 hours of direct sun per day. A south-facing balcony is ideal.
  • Shelter from wind: Tall varieties can snap in the wind. A protected corner or a stake will provide support.

Watering

  • Plenty and regularly: Sunflowers are thirsty plants — in summer, they often need watering every day.
  • Water in the morning: This gives the plant access to water throughout the day.
  • Finger test: If the top 2 cm of soil are dry, water. More Watering Tips.

Fertilizing

  • Heavy feeder: Feed every 1–2 weeks with liquid fertilizer in the watering water.
  • From bud formation onward: Use a fertilizer high in potassium — it encourages blooming.

Harvesting Sunflower Seeds

  • When: When the petals have dried out and the back of the flower head is turning brown.
  • How: Cut off the flower head and hang it upside down in a dry place. After 1–2 weeks, the seeds can be removed easily.
  • Use: For roasting and snacking, as bird feed, or for sowing next year.

Frequently Asked Questions

That depends on the variety. Dwarf varieties like "Big Smile" grow to only 30–40 cm. "Teddy Bear" reaches 40–60 cm. Classic garden varieties can also grow over 1 meter in a pot, but they then need a very large container (40+ cm) and support.

Yes — most sunflowers (Helianthus annuus) are annuals. They germinate, bloom, and die within one season. There are perennial sunflowers (Helianthus maximiliani, Helianthus tuberosus/Jerusalem artichoke), but these are meant for garden beds, not pots.

Almost always: lack of water. Potted sunflowers dry out very quickly in hot weather. Water thoroughly right away — the plant will often recover within a few hours. On very hot days, water in the morning and evening. A pot that is too small can also be the cause.
