The bird of paradise flower — one of the most spectacular blooms in the plant world. And a houseplant that rewards patience.

The Strelitzia looks like an exotic bird in flight — orange and blue “feathers” rising from a green “beak.” No wonder it is called the bird of paradise flower. In South Africa, where it comes from, it grows wild along riverbanks. In Vienna, it sits indoors by the window, waiting for enough light to finally flower.

And that is exactly the problem: many people buy a Strelitzia for its spectacular flower, but indoors it often stays stubbornly green for years. What really matters is a sunny spot, a little patience — and a cool, bright period in winter.

Quick profile: Strelitzia

Botanical name: Strelitzia reginae

Origin: South Africa (Eastern Cape)

Height: 1–1.5 m (as a potted plant)

Hardy: no (min. 5°C)

Flowering season: winter – spring (if it flowers)

Cut flower: lasts 14–21 days

Position: full sun

Difficulty: easy (plant), difficult (flowering)

Strelitzia placement

The right spot for your Strelitzia is the key to everything. This plant wants sun — as much as possible. A south-facing window is the bare minimum. Even better: place it outside on the balcony or terrace in summer, in full sun.

In South Africa, the Strelitzia grows in full sun at temperatures of up to 40°C. In a Vienna apartment with a north-facing window, it may survive, but it will never flower. The plant needs at least six hours of direct sun a day to form flower buds.

Why won’t my Strelitzia flower?

It’s the question every Strelitzia owner asks sooner or later. If the Strelitzia is not flowering, there may be several possible reasons:

It’s too young. Strelitzias grown from seed need five to seven years before their first bloom. Even purchased plants sold as young plants often need another two to three years. Patience really is the magic word here.

Too little light. The most common reason. Without enough direct sunlight, the plant will not form flower buds.

No temperature difference. In nature, the Strelitzia experiences cool nights (10–15°C) and warm days. This difference encourages flowering. In an evenly heated apartment, that stimulus is missing. In autumn, placing the plant in a cooler spot (10–15°C) for a few weeks can help.

Pot too large. Strelitzias flower better when they are slightly root-bound. Don’t repot too often — only when the roots are truly pushing out of the pot.

Tip: If you don’t want to wait years for it to flower, buy the Strelitzia as a cut flower. At MoBlumen, it’s available for EUR 9.90 per stem — and it can last up to three weeks in a vase.

Strelitzia in a vase

As a cut flower, the Strelitzia in a vase is a dream. It lasts two to three weeks — longer than almost any other cut flower. Trim the stem at an angle, place it in a sturdy, heavy vase (the bloom is heavy and can tip over light vases), use clean water, and change it every few days.

Several individual flowers gradually unfold from the green “beak” (the spathe). You can gently help the process along by opening the spathe slightly — this lets the hidden flowers emerge more quickly.

Overwintering the Strelitzia

Overwintering the Strelitzia is easy in Austria, as long as you don’t leave it outside. It cannot tolerate frost. If you kept it on the balcony during summer, bring it indoors by October at the latest — before night temperatures drop below 5°C.

In winter, keep it in a cool, bright spot (10–15°C, south-facing window). Water less and do not fertilize. This resting period even helps encourage flowering in spring.

Frequently asked questions about the Bird of Paradise

From seed, it takes five to seven years. Young plants bought from a shop often need another two to three years. It will only form flower buds with enough sun and a cool winter rest period.

Mildly toxic. All parts of the plant can cause stomach and intestinal discomfort if swallowed. Keep out of reach in households with children and pets.

Besides the common orange Bird of Paradise, Strelitzia nicolai — the giant white variety — makes a real statement indoors. These plants want a bright location near a window and a sunny spot outdoors in summer. Water them with lukewarm water and keep humidity high (misting helps). Curled leaves usually mean the air is too dry. If brown leaves appear, trim off the affected leaves along with any old leaves that look spent. Repot once the roots circle the bottom of the pot, using fresh soil. In winter, move the plant to a bright, cool room. Propagation works best by dividing a mature clump in spring.
